Students Express Themselves through Peyback Grant

ANGOLA —Some 400 at-risk Steuben County students will stomp their expressions through the arts thanks to a grant from Peyton Manning’s foundation.

The Steuben County Literacy Coalition recently received a $5,000 grant from the PeyBack Foundation. Manning, the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, started the foundation in 1999 to provide programs for at-risk youth.

Even Start still available to Steuben parents

The program provides GED preparation and other learning opportunities for adults with preschool-aged children. The children receive school during the day, and in a change this year, adult GED classes will be offered both during the day and evenings at the Literacy Coaltion, 1208 S. Wayne St., Angola.

REAL men read to classes

The Steuben County Literacy Coalition started REAL Men Read in conjunction with Summer Advantage this year. For five weeks, volunteers read books to classes at Prairie Heights, Fremont and the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County Summer Advantage site at Carlin Park Elementary School in cooperation with the United Way.

REAL Men Read

Their goal is to encourage the children to Read, Excel, Achieve and Lead — REAL. The REAL Men Read initiative was started in Atlanta Public Schools. It puts male mentors in elementary classrooms “so these kids have somebody to look up to,” said Farnham.
